The island of Krk, legend and reality
Among the 1185 islands in Croatia, one is golden and that is exactly the island of Krk. It is located in the center of Kvarner Bay and is recognized as one of the most attractive tourist destinations.
The island of Krk is the northernmost island in the Mediterranean, located in the Kvarner Bay. It is the largest island on the Adriatic, 409.9 km2.
The mild Mediterranean climate, the favorable geographical position and the diversity of natural and cultural beauties have named it the “”Golden Island”” in ancient times.
Its cultural heritage brought it another name – the cradle of Croatian culture, and by the beginning of the twentieth century it was named the “”sixth continent””.
The coast is about 190 km long. The nearest distant land is only one hundred meters away, where the neighboring islands – Cres, Goli island and Rab – are situated. There are three streams and two lakes on Krk.
In contrast to the natural features, Mediterranean summer climates, mild winters, cold wind from the northeast (bura) and warm southeastern wind (jugo), as well as the summer-friendly western maestral should be added to the list.
Literally, all the roads lead to Krk: from the mainland – via Krka bridge; via seaports and harbors, ferries to the Valbiska harbor, planes at Rijeka airport in Omišalj.
The island of Krk is just 30 km away from Rijeka – the traffic, business, commercial, university and cultural center of Kvarner.
Since ancient times, it is believed that the island of Krk is destined to number seven: in the seventh century the Croats settled, seven times successfully defended against the pirates, Frankopan the seventh prince, was the last one ruling Krk. Today, the island of Krk has seven centers.
